Weekend reading list: 4.10.26
The starter facelift, LACMA's $720 expansion, dogs in the city, and more in this week's reading + shopping roundup!
1. WATCHING
While catching up with my friend Rachel yesterday (and meeting her precious new baby, Cece!), she told me she and her husband have been enjoying the Scrubs reboot! As someone who loves a sitcom (I'm a Friends fanatic!) and also obsesses over medical shows (Grey's! The Pitt!), I'm surprised I never got into the original Scrubs when it first came out. I feel like it just missed me at the time, but I'm thinking it would be a good show for me to get into! While it is a comedy and focuses on medicine, at its core it's a story about friendship - a bromance between two straight men. That's not a subject you see often covered in media, and is certainly interesting to revisit now given the research on how men are (or aren't?) functioning in society today. This was an interesting read on the new reboot, the friendship between the two lead actors on and off the show, and how Scrubs is interpreting male friendship in today's lonely world. Adding Scrubs to my list when I run out of shows!
2. STYLE
If there's one thing Gen Z knows how to do, it's follow a trend. They were the first generation to be fully "plugged in", with access to phones, social media and fashion content at their fingertips ever since they started dressing themselves. While this access to social media and trends may be helpful in avoiding some of the awkward pitfalls of your younger years, it also has resulted in a lack of individuality. People have just hopped from one trend to the next without much thought! This has led to overconsumption and this feeling of "sameness" across an entire age group of people. If you've walked around the West Village, you know what I'm talking about - it's common to come across a large swath of 20-something girls wearing the exact same outfit. It seems to have hit a tipping point though, as Gen Z is now seeking out ways to differentiate themselves and develop their own sense of style. More are shopping second hand for unique pieces they know they won't see on friends, and selecting items that aren't so basic and easy to recreate/replicate. Brands are getting more experimental as a result, and making more creative pieces to appeal to that sense of individuality! It'll be interesting to keep an eye on - will this craving for uniqueness be yet another passing trend?
3. NEW YORK
New York City is very dog friendly. You see them literally everywhere, even where they're technically not supposed to be! And apparently, tensions are boiling over between dog owners and other New Yorkers. I feel like I'm pretty good with Reeses and only bring her places I know she's allowed - I take her to parks, open-air/outdoor patios at restaurants, and the like, but I've never taken her into CVS, a grocery store, a doctor's office or anything like that... but I definitely see it from other pet owners. Most restaurants have signs that say "service dogs only" and "no pets", but I can't count how many times I've seen that rule broken. I love dogs, but I also am respectful of other people and of rules (...most of the time) - I think some people lack awareness on how it might complicate a situation, or simply don't care about the rules and think they don't apply to them. Also, it's wild how many people don't pick up after their dogs when they take them out! The amount of shit I come across each day is crime!! It was especially apparent after the snowstorms this winter, when poo was just piling up and causing what can only be described as a biohazard on the city sidewalks. The city streets would be SO much cleaner if all dog owners carried poo bags with them on their walks. Anyway, it seems we may be at a tipping point - it would be a shame to see the city become less dog friendly, but owners need to mind the rules that do exist or we risk more restrictions!
4. TRAVEL
Is flying in basic economy actually cheaper? The initial ticket price may be enticing, but with rising checked luggage costs, other hidden fees and less flexibility, is it truly worth it? This article investigated. My biggest gripe with going basic economy is boarding order - I personally want to be on the plane as soon as possible to secure overhead bin space next to/near my seat. If I can avoid being in a later boarding group, I absolutely will! I also avoid basic economy when flying with Reeses, so I can get a little extra leg room since she's in her carrier under the seat in front of me. Otherwise, I don't mind flying basic economy if I'm traveling sans dog and am able to select an aisle seat.
5. ART
It's been quite awhile since I ventured over to Los Angeles, but with the $720 million dollar relaunch of LACMA, I'm thinking of tacking on a trip! The Los Angeles County Museum of Art went under a six year redesign and expansion, and is expected to reopen later this month. You can expect nearly 2,500 pieces of ancient and newer art pieces to be displayed in the 110,000 square foot space designed by architect, Peter Zumthor, and they won't be sequestered into their own galleries. Expect to be surprised in each space with pieces from different eras co-mingling! I'll be in Carlsbad for three weeks in August, and am considering a night or two in LA before I head back to NYC to check it out!
6. BEAUTY
Women are getting facelifts younger than ever before! It's a new era, and people are calling it "the starter facelift". Instead of waiting until their face and neck are fully sagging in their 50s and 60s, more and more women are doing smaller tweaks in their forties to address earlier signs of aging. It actually makes a lot of sense to me, knowing that your skin loses elasticity as you age! You'll recover faster and your skin will bounce back quicker than you might if you waited a decade or two, and the results will be more subtle as it's not one big overhaul but smaller tweaks over time. Color me curious!
